Apostille and Legalisation for Marriage Documents
If you need to use your Australian marriage certificate overseas, the receiving country may ask for an apostille or authentication.
Start with the right certificate
You will usually need the official marriage certificate issued by Queensland Births, Deaths and Marriages, not the ceremonial certificate from the day.
Who handles apostilles and authentications?
In Australia, these services are handled by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Before you apply
Check with the overseas authority that will receive the document so you know whether they want:
- an apostille
- an authentication
- a translation
- anything else specific to that country
