Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of service is this?
A paperwork-only, registry-style marriage service by private celebrants. It is not a government registry and it is not a full wedding ceremony.
How do we get started?
Click the Get Married link, fill out the booking form, and pay the fee. That starts the process.
When is our date actually confirmed?
After we receive your paperwork. The final date, time, and place depend on when your NOIM is received and on our availability.
How much notice do we need?
Your Notice of Intended Marriage must be lodged at least one calendar month before the marriage date and can be lodged up to 18 months ahead.
Can we get married online?
No. Australian marriages must happen in person with both people, the celebrant, and two adult witnesses physically present.
What documents do we need?
Usually a passport, or a birth certificate plus photo ID. If you were married before, you also need proof of divorce or the death of your former spouse. Non-English documents need translations.
What is the NOIM?
It is the Notice of Intended Marriage. It is the legal form that gives notice of your intention to marry.
Is there an easier way to do the NOIM?
Yes. NOIM Easy walks you through the form step by step and creates a PDF ready to print or email to your celebrant.
Who can witness the NOIM?
An authorised witness such as a celebrant, justice of the peace, lawyer, police officer, or certain other authorised people. If you are overseas, different witness options apply.
Do we both have to sign the NOIM together?
No. You can sign separately. In some circumstances, one party can sign first so the notice period can begin, provided the other party signs before the marriage.
Do we need witnesses on the day?
Yes. You need two witnesses who are both at least 18 years old. We can help if you need witness support.
Can we bring guests?
This is not designed as a guest-focused wedding ceremony. It is best suited to the couple and the required witnesses, with only a very small number of extra people if appropriate.
Can we have a big celebration later?
Yes. Many couples do the legal marriage first and celebrate later with a full wedding or personal ceremony.
What if we want the big celebration now?
Then this is probably not the right service for you. Book a full-service celebrant or an elopement service instead.
How do we get the official marriage certificate?
After your marriage is registered, you order the official certificate directly from Births, Deaths and Marriages Queensland.
Can the one-month period be shortened?
Sometimes, but only in limited circumstances and only through the proper shortening of time process after the NOIM has been lodged.
