ID Requirements for Marriage
Before a marriage can take place, we need evidence of your date and place of birth and we must be satisfied about your identity.
Most people provide either:
- A current passport.
- A birth certificate plus photo ID.
Photo ID can include:
- driver licence
- proof of age card
- passport
- another government-issued photo ID
If you were married before
You also need evidence that the previous marriage has ended, such as:
- a divorce order
- a certificate of divorce or decree absolute, if older documents apply
- a death certificate for a former spouse
If your documents are not in English
You will usually need official translations.
Names on documents
If your current name is different from the name on your birth certificate, we may also need:
- a change of name certificate
- a previous marriage certificate
- other supporting name-linking documents
Best approach
Send clear copies early so we can tell you if anything else is needed before your marriage is confirmed.
