Registry-style marriages by private celebrants, not a government service. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)

What is the NOIM?

The Notice of Intended Marriage, usually called the NOIM, is the form that gives formal notice that you intend to marry.

Under Australian law, it must be given to your celebrant:

  • at least one calendar month before the marriage, and
  • no more than 18 months before the marriage

Booking the service or paying the fee does not start the notice period. The notice period starts when the signed NOIM is given to the celebrant.

The easiest way to do it

NOIM Easy walks you through the form step by step and generates a completed PDF ready to print. You can also email a copy directly to your celebrant if you want.

Who can witness the NOIM?

In Australia, the NOIM can be witnessed by an authorised person such as:

  • a marriage celebrant
  • a justice of the peace
  • a barrister or solicitor
  • a legally qualified medical practitioner
  • a police officer

If you are overseas, different authorised witnesses can apply, such as an Australian diplomatic or consular officer, a notary public, or another approved witness.

Do both people need to sign at the same time?

No. You can sign separately.

In some situations, one person can sign first so the notice period can begin, as long as there is a genuine reason the other signature cannot be conveniently obtained at that time and the other person signs before the marriage takes place.

What else do we need?

You will also need to provide identity documents and, if relevant:

  • divorce papers
  • a death certificate for a former spouse
  • translations of any non-English documents

What happens after the NOIM?

Once we receive the NOIM and supporting documents, we can move toward confirming the date, time, and place, subject to availability.
