Marriage Requirements in Queensland
Getting married in Queensland is straightforward when you know the legal requirements.
The main requirements
To get married in Australia, you generally need to:
- be at least 18 years old
- not already be married to someone else
- not be closely related in a prohibited relationship
- understand what marriage means
- freely consent to the marriage
- give a valid Notice of Intended Marriage at least one month before the marriage
- marry in person before an authorised celebrant and two adult witnesses
Documents you will usually need
- a passport, or a birth certificate plus photo ID
- evidence of divorce if you were married before
- a death certificate if a former spouse has died
- official translations if documents are not in English
Important practical points
- You cannot get legally married online.
- We are a private celebrant service, not a government registry.
- The final date, time, and place are confirmed after the paperwork is received and availability is checked.
- The official marriage certificate is ordered later from BDM Queensland.
If you are under 18
Marriage under 18 is very limited in Australia.
Usually, both people must be 18 or older. In rare cases, a person aged 16 or 17 may marry with court approval and the required consents.
If you want something bigger than the legal marriage
This website is for the legal paperwork-only service.
