Shortening of Time for Marriage
Shortening of time is the formal process used when a couple wants to marry less than one month after the NOIM is given.
Important first step
The NOIM must be lodged first.
There is nothing to shorten until the signed NOIM has been given to the celebrant.
The limited categories
Applications can only be considered in limited circumstances, including:
- employment-related or other travel commitments
- wedding or celebration arrangements, or religious considerations
- medical reasons
- legal proceedings
- an error in giving notice
Important things to understand
- approval is not automatic
- the category alone is not enough without supporting material
- the proper authority decides, not the celebrant alone
- we still need all other marriage requirements to be met
What we can do
We can explain the process, help make sure the NOIM has been lodged properly, and point you toward the right next step.
What we cannot do
We cannot promise approval.
Best approach
If you know you want to get married, lodge the NOIM as early as possible so you are not relying on shortening of time.
